International festival of horror, fantasy and science fiction cinema.
Since 2005, Montevideo Fantástico has promoted independent and ultra-independent cinema from Uruguay and abroad, with a focus on films that rarely reach commercial screens or traditional cultural circuits.
The festival
Montevideo Fantástico is Uruguay's first film festival devoted exclusively to horror, fantasy and science fiction cinema. Since 2005, it has promoted independent and ultra-independent films from Uruguay and abroad, with a focus on works that rarely reach commercial screens or traditional cultural circuits.
The festival includes short film and feature film competitions, parallel screenings, genre classics, talks with specialists, tributes to figures from fantastic cinema and a wider programme of cultural activities. Its screenings have taken place in cultural centres, theatres and independent venues in Montevideo and across Uruguay.
Montevideo Fantástico has been declared of Cultural Interest by Uruguay's Ministry of Education and Culture, of Municipal Interest by the City of Montevideo and of Tourist Interest by the Ministry of Tourism. It has also been present at Punta del Este International Film Festival, Piriápolis de Película, Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre, El Ángel Exterminador, FIXIÓN Fest and Zinema Zombie Fest.
