Pig that Survived Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Corea del Sur·2024·105 min·AM 18

Having survived foot-and-mouth disease through sheer willpower alone, “Pig H” makes himself a solemn promise: he must become human, or die as rubbish. He knows it is the only way. To become a complete human being — body and face — beyond all doubt. He is willing to give everything, whatever the cost. Meanwhile, “Choi Jeong-Seok,” having endured relentless bullying since childhood, swears he will leave his wretched human life behind. He would rather live as a beast — primal, faithful to instinct, incapable of contemplating death. He is willing to give up everything.

Festival note by Alejandro Yamgotchian

South Korean animator Hur Bum-wook (43) summed up the film’s subject in a single sentence: “it’s about the insignificance of being human.” He takes his time to portray the transformation of both beings — the hatred of humanity — as they converge in a forest yet develop almost in parallel, in an increasingly bleak and hopeless world. Physical, psychological and spiritual impact; their reactions, reflections, the opinions of others… Two portraits that also allow the filmmaker to reflect on bullying, racism and even suicide.
