EL CONVENTO

España / Italia / Uruguay·2025·99 min·AM 18

Lucía and Ana, two young novices newly arrived at a small convent, are drawn into the strange events occurring there. The mother superior — known for performing small miracles — takes them under her wing, but she is in fact the epicentre of a series of horrors that will engulf the young women, as she attempts to bring the presence of Evil into the world.

Festival note by Alejandro Yamgotchian

This monastic horror story, based on real events, has its strong moments — a co-production between Spain, Italy and Uruguay, with several familiar names from the local genre scene (producer Ignacio García Cucucovich, animator Pablo Praino, filmmaker Maxi Contenti, among others). Cinema has not produced a great deal of valuable material on this subject, despite having explored it since the silent era itself. Among the precious few in the same vein, it is impossible not to think of Ken Russell’s The Devils; the classic Aztec Gothic horror Alucarda; or the cult Mexican film Satánico Pandemonium (never released in Uruguay); as well as the Italian Interior of a Convent, which had a brief run at Cine Universitario in the late 1980s.
