In addition to being a filmmaker, French director Mathias Averty is a journalist — and it shows in this documentary about Satanism in France. In his eagerness to interview practitioners and explore this micro-world, he ends up participating in the activities of his subjects, giving the documentary a wholly revelatory perspective while remaining measured and respectful in its editing, free of sensationalism and absolutely respectful towards the subject and especially the causes and reasons that led his interviewees to worship the Devil. “I was trying to understand why young people continue to venerate the figure of Satan, at a time when it is said he no longer frightens anyone. It is an opportunity to study the history and contemporary resonance of the figure of Satan, as well as the emergence of new forms of belief.”
